Matt received his M.A. in Physics from the University of Southern California and his B.S. in Engineering Physics from the Colorado School of Mines. Matt’s research before Zapata focused on benchmarking cutting-edge classical and quantum combinatorial optimizers. At Zapata, Matt is focused on benchmarking, quantum optimization, and machine learning.

Question & Answer

Why have you chosen a career in quantum?

Math and technology have fascinated me since childhood. So quantum computing is a chance to live out the dream of a job exploring math, coding, and cutting-edge technology. The reason I ended up in quantum in particular comes from an interest in learning about the operating system of the universe. I picked up enough quantum physics knowledge that I became useful! And though I arrived at usefulness unintentionally, I learned it is worth aiming for from the outset.

What is a problem you dream of solving (with quantum)?

I hope for an outcome with quantum computers that allows humans to see a glimpse of nature we have never been able to see before. I hope all the usefulness of quantum computers leads to enough focus and funding to produce a quantum computer capable of fundamentally new insights into the operating system of the universe.
